The Love Triangle

We first met Joyce at Bernard and Rita’s engagement party.  She is Bernard’s sister and the twin of Doris who you might recall moved into the Triang DH/D with her husband and daughter when Bernard and Rita moved out of it.

Stanley, Doris and Joyce

Up until recently,  Joyce was an airline hostess and we were introduced to her airline pilot beau, Captain Richard Clutch, at Bernard and Rita’s wedding.  Attending the wedding with them was Rabbie, the hard-drinking, warm-hearted and long-suffering friend of Captain Clutch. It soon became apparent that Rabbie was secretly in love with Joyce and harboured hopes that she would eventually see Richard for the cheating cad that he was and turn her affections to himself.  Joyce had always made it clear that she was very fond of Rabbie and he occasionally thought to declare his love to her but could never quite pluck up the courage.

Until, that is, one fateful day when there was an assassination attempt on the life of Her Majesty the Queen and brave Rabbie took a bullet for his sovereign and saved the day. As he lay bleeding on the pavement, a distraught Joyce rushed to his side and Rabbie (with what might have been his dying breath, had it not been for the subsequent swift actions of Nurse Nancy Harm), finally told her that he loved her (Joyce that is, not Nurse Nancy..) and Joyce rather suprised herself by responding that she loved him too.

Luckily, Rabbie recovered fully from this near-fatal incident. However, unaware that immediately following it, Joyce had broken off her relationship with Captain Clutch, Rabbie managed to convince himself that his mind had played tricks on him as he lay dying and that Joyce couldn’t possibly have said that she loved him.  And so Rabbie’s love for Joyce had continued to burn in his heart but, most confusingly for her, he kept his distance.

Thankfully, however, fate eventually brought them together again at a barbecue held on the roof terrace of their neighbours’ Triang Ultra Modern.  Rabbie, not knowing that Joyce had thrown over Captian Clutch, was incensed to see him flirting outrageously with their hostess and famous Grecon film actress, Percephone Lavelle, right under Joyce’s nose.

Spurred on by this perceived injustice and a feeling that it was now or never, Rabbie masterfully took Joyce to one side and declared his love for her.

To the great relief of all concerned, Joyce welcomed Rabbie with open arms and their future together was assured.
