A population the size of Grecondale requires amenities and to that end, some of the more enterprising residents have started up businesses. The first to open was The Wool and Wire Tearoom.
Based in a 1980s Christopher Cole property, the day-to-day running of this business is handled by the manageress, Doris. The owner, however, is a bookish historian called Alan who lives in the flat above the the tearoom.
Alan can be seen here on the right, enjoying an afternoon of witty repartee with his two good friends, Jonathan (on the sofa) and Peter. Their other chum, Dudley was no doubt busy on the piano in the adjacent room.
The wonderful cakes served in the Wool & Wire Tearoom are supplied by another of Grecondale’s businesses, Jenny Wren’s Bakery.
Little is known about the proprietor, Jenny Wren herself, but all agree that she makes exceedingly good cakes (and pies and bread!)
Several of Grecondale’s residents own motor vehicles of one kind or another and so it was no surprise when budding entrepreneur, Martin, opened up a petrol station and car dealership in the village.
Martin’s right hand man and superb motor mechanic, Felix, is in charge of the car servicing and valeting department.
Car sales, however, are Martin’s domain. With a wife, five children and four dogs to feed, the success of his business is crucial and I’m therefore pleased to report that after a slow start, business is now steady away.
The fourth and final business to open (to date) in Grecondale was the hair salon. This is run by hairdressers Antonio and Guy, from a downstairs room in the Triang Ultra Modern.
Affable Guy is the perfect foil for eccentric, gossip-loving Antonio and the salon is the place to go for the latest in both hairstyles and tittle-tattle.
Assisting Antonio and Guy in the salon is their Geordie-speaking junior, Vicky.
So there we have it – the four business of Grecondale. Oh, actually, I should probably mention a fifth Greondale-based business: HasCon Limited (variously referred to as HasCon Inc, HasCon Yorkshire Limited, etc.) You might recall that in the earlier blog ‘Bernard and Rita‘ , the pair met up in The Hastily Constructed public house near Greconville – well therein was born HasCon Ltd – a company which provides venues for events where no permanent venue exists. This highly flexible and imaginative business has been hugely successful and is now much patronised throughout the whole of Grecondom.
